BYD, the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, has officially launched its premium Yangwang brand just three months ago, and now it is set to showcase one of its models at the Shanghai Auto Show, which is scheduled to run from April 18-27. The U9 electric supercar will be on display at the event and will be available for viewing by the general public from April 22-27.
The Yangwang U9, which will be priced in the range of RMB 1 million ($145,400), has the capability of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in less than three seconds. BYD had revealed earlier this year that the U9 is built with an ultimate safety body structure that can drive comfortably on city roads as well as push the limits on the track.
Yangwang shared three images of the U9 electric supercar on its official Weibo account today, which reveal some of the car’s features, including headlights that differ slightly from the ones shown when the model was unveiled in January.
BYD’s U8 hardcore off-road SUV, the first production model from the Yangwang brand, was also announced during the launch in January. The U8, which is priced at the RMB 1 million level, can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in four seconds and is more than 5 meters long and 2 meters wide.
It remains unclear if the U8 will also be on display at the Shanghai Auto Show. The launch of the Yangwang brand is part of BYD’s broader plan to expand its presence in the high-end EV market, as it aims to compete with Tesla and other luxury carmakers. The company is also investing heavily in research and development to bring innovative technology to its vehicles, which is expected to play a key role in driving its growth in the coming years.
