Energica Motor Company, an Italian motorbike manufacturer and subsidiary of Ideanomics, is expanding its horizons by developing all-electric solutions for ultra-light and light aircraft. The company has partnered with Phenix Air Corp and Pure Flight to test and integrate its powertrain into small aircraft, with the aim of achieving the highest possible range for all-electric intra-European air travel.
As part of the partnership, Energica’s powertrain will first be used to power an airplane propeller for testing, followed by an ultralight seaplane to further test flight performance. If successful, the powertrain will be integrated into the Pure Flight ΦNIX airplane. The collaboration between Energica and Pure Flight aims to combine Energica’s powertrain and Pure Flight’s high-efficiency airframe to develop a lightweight, high-performance electric aircraft that can achieve a significant range.
Moreover, Phenix Air Corp will leverage Energica technology to test the performance and range of EV conversions, using its purpose-built Sonex airframe for small aircraft applications. Through these partnerships, Energica aims to accelerate the development of its all-electric solutions and enter the aviation sector, which has been at the forefront of innovation in the transport industry.
Carlo Iacovini, General Manager of Energica Inside, the business unit responsible for the company’s collaborations, stated that “EV technologies are entering into the equation of product development.” Energica Inside is based at Energica’s headquarters in Modena, Italy, and is working on several new projects in the fields of agriculture, shipping, and urban mobility. With its foray into the aviation industry, Energica is expanding its scope to provide sustainable transportation solutions across various sectors.
