Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) have continued their impressive growth in China, accounting for almost 90% of new energy vehicle (NEV) miles driven in January, according to the National Big Data Alliance of New Energy Vehicles (NBDANEV). The latest figures showed 17.1 billion kilometers of mileage were driven by NEVs in January, an increase of 5.99% from December. NEVs include plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs), BEVs, and fuel-cell vehicles. By the end of 2022, China had 13.1 million NEVs, with BEVs accounting for 79.78% of all NEV ownership.
In 2022, China’s retail sales of new energy passenger vehicles increased by 90% year-on-year, with BEVs accounting for 4.24 million units and PHEVs accounting for 1.42 million units. PHEVs have grown by 184.2% over the past three years and have become an important choice for many families’ first vehicles.

In January, the NEVs of the top 10 car companies drove 7.974 billion kilometers, contributing 46.58%. BYD’s NEVs drove the most miles in January with a total of 1.577 billion kilometers, contributing 9.21% of all NEV miles driven.
The growth of NEVs in China has been significant, with 4.1% of the total vehicle fleet of 319 million now made up of NEVs. This trend is set to continue as China pushes to reduce emissions and improve air quality. As BEVs continue to dominate the market, it’s clear that they will play a key role in achieving the country’s sustainability goals.
