Mini, the British carmaker, has unveiled its first-ever production all-electric convertible model, the Cooper SE Convertible. It will be produced in limited numbers of just 999 units, alongside the internal combustion engine version at the company’s Netherlands manufacturing facility.
The new model is a stopgap before the next generation of all-electric Minis is released. The car will come in two exterior colors, with door handles, side scuttles, and the surrounds of the front and rear lights finished in Resolute Bronze. To emphasize its exclusivity and zero-emissions, the car will feature 1/999 lettering on the door sill trims and side scuttles.
The Mini Cooper SE Convertible will feature seat heating, adjustable thigh support, and a sports multifunction steering wheel covered in Nappa leather. Yellow accents underline the car’s electric powertrain, while the heads-up display and connected infotainment system provide ample tech options.
A single front-mounted electric motor provides 135 kilowatts of power, and the car can sprint from 0-62 mph in 7.1 seconds, with a range of 125 miles in the WLTP test cycle.
The Mini Cooper SE Convertible was first previewed as a one-off prototype in 2022, and it will be available in series production form in Europe starting in April 2023, with production limited to just 999 units.
The convertible roof can be opened or closed at speeds of up to 18.6 mph, and an intermediate sliding roof position is also available. While it won’t be available in the United States, Mini is already working on the next generation of its electric models, which will likely be released in the future.
“Three years ago we launched the all-electric MINI Cooper SE, and today one in five MINI sold in Europe is an all-electric MINI. This success has spurred us to implement the small series of the MINI Cooper SE Convertible within only a few months. I’m delighted that we can offer 999 MINI customers an extraordinary and exclusive open-air go-kart feeling,” said Stefanie Wurst, Head of the MINI Brand.
