The popularity of electric vehicles has led to a surge in interest in electromodding, which involves converting traditional gasoline vehicles into electric ones. This process may even have a greater positive impact on the environment than building new electric vehicles from scratch. In response to this growing trend, California State Senator Anthony Portantino has proposed Senate Bill 301, which aims to provide tax incentives of up to $2,000 for individuals who convert their vehicles to electric power.
According to Portantino, the high cost of new electric vehicles, which average $66,000, makes electromodding a more affordable option for many people. The cost of converting a gas-powered vehicle to electric power can range from $14,000 to much more, but this cost is still lower than buying a brand new electric vehicle. Additionally, Portantino believes that the bill will support the EV conversion industry and create green jobs at small shops throughout California.
The California Air Resources Board will be responsible for defining the details of the bill if it is passed, including eligible applicants, eligible conversion kits, and income limits. The bill is being sponsored by the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA), which represents the aftermarket industry and is a leader in innovation and zero-emissions technologies.
SEMA President and CEO Mike Spagnola stated that the bill creates opportunities for California-based small businesses and their employees to have access to affordable zero-emissions vehicles. California residents who support the bill can show their support by sending a letter to their local official, with a template provided by the SEMA Action Network.
