NIO and Shell last year signed a battery charging and exchange station cooperation agreement across China and Europe.
On August 1st, NIO and Shell launched a supercharging station and battery exchange station located in Xiamen, Fujian province in Southeast China.
The station is equipped with a second generation battery swap unit and two 180 kW supercharging piles.

With this addition, NIO has a total of 1,048 swap stations, and 1,777 charging stations with more than 10,000 charging piles in China.
The agreement between NIO and Shell covers the promotion, construction and operation of a battery charging and swap facility. The two companies agreed to build 100 battery swap stations by 2025.
For the European market, NIO and Shell will start operating pilot swapping stations by the end of 2022. Nio itself has just opened their first factory outside China which produces battery swap stations located in Hungary.
Under the agreement, Shell’s charging facilities will be open to NIO users across Europe.
This is not the first time NIO has collaborated with the oil giant. In April 2021, NIO and Chinese oil company Sinopec opened a battery swap station at the Sinopec gas station located in Beijing. NIO also has another partnership with Chinese oil company CNPC in November 2021.
NIO is also expanding their sales with a presence in Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and Denmark in the second half of 2022.
To date, NIO has set up 4,000 battery swap stations globally, with a quarter of them located outside China.
