Isuzu Motors Limited (Isuzu), Denso Corporation (Denso), Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota), Hino Motors, Ltd. (Hino), and Commercial Japan Partnership Technologies Corporation (CJPT) announced that they have started planning and basic research on hydrogen engines for heavy duty commercial vehicles.
The strategic partnership aims to better utilize internal combustion engines as an option to achieve CO2 carbon neutrality.
Reported by the official Toyota Global website on Sunday (10/7/2022), the automotive industry now has various powertrain options to meet customer demands on the road map towards carbon neutrality emissions.
The powertrain options include HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle), BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) and FCEV (Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle) including hydrogen engines which are marketed according to different energy conditions in various countries and the use of various customers.
Toyota claims that the hydrogen-powered Corolla has participated in the Super Taikyu Series 2 since May 2021, and at that time hydrogen engine technology has continued to develop.
In addition, efforts to achieve a hydrogen society are accelerating, as are the number of partners in producing, transporting, and using hydrogen.
CO2 reduction in transportation and logistics by heavy-duty commercial vehicles is an important part of infrastructure that supports people’s lives including solving social problems that need to be addressed together with partners who share the same vision to achieve a carbon neutral society.
Isuzu, Denso, Toyota, Hino, and CJPT believe that hydrogen engines are one solution to this problem, and will leverage the technology and know-how that each company has accumulated to study the potential of hydrogen engines in heavy-duty commercial vehicles.
The five companies will contribute to creating a better society by expanding the options available to achieve carbon neutrality.
