Hyderabad City Police has commissioned 15 electric vehicles from Indian automaker Tata Motors, deploying the Punch.ev micro-SUV for emergency response and regular patrolling duties across the South Indian city.
The fleet comprises seven vehicles assigned to Spandana, Hyderabad’s women-focused first responder system dedicated to the safety of women and children. The remaining eight cars will support routine police patrols.
C. V. Anand, Director General of Police for Telangana, officially flagged off the vehicles at the City Armed Reserve headquarters on 29 October.
The police department has not disclosed whether the vehicles feature technical modifications beyond their dedicated police livery. However, it confirmed that all 15 units use the Punch.ev 40, the higher-capacity and more powerful of the model’s two electric powertrain options.
Punch.ev 40 Offers Up to 468 km MIDC Range
The Tata Punch.ev 40 is equipped with a front-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor producing 95 kW of power and 154 Nm of torque.
The motor draws energy from a 40 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack. Tata Motors lists a driving range of 468 kilometres under the Modified Indian Driving Cycle (MIDC). Under the company’s internal C75 test cycle, the expected real-world range is approximately 335 to 355 kilometres.
Using a DC fast charger, the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% state of charge in around 30 minutes.
Police Fleet Uses Smart+ Equipment Level
Tata Motors offers the Punch.ev in five equipment levels: Smart, Smart+, Adventure, Empowered and Empowered+. Hyderabad City Police selected the Smart+ configuration with the 40 kWh battery.
The Smart+ 40 includes three driving modes — Eco, City and Sport — alongside paddle shifters for adjusting regenerative braking.
Other standard equipment includes 16-inch steel wheels with black covers, an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, automatic climate control, 65-watt USB Type-C charging ports and a rear-view camera system.
Tata Punch.ev Pricing in India
The Punch.ev is priced between 979,000 and 1.299 million rupees (approximately €9,200 to €12,200), depending on the variant.
The Smart+ 40 configuration selected for Hyderabad’s police fleet carries a retail price of 1.119 million rupees, equivalent to approximately €10,500.
The deployment adds battery-electric vehicles to Hyderabad’s police operations, with the seven-car allocation to Spandana specifically supporting the city’s response services for women and children.
