Battery-electric vehicle (BEV) registrations in the European Union rose sharply in June, with new registrations increasing 60.7% year-on-year as electric vehicles continued to gain market share across the region.
According to data published by the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), 270,557 new battery-electric passenger cars were registered in the EU during June, up from the same month in 2025. Overall passenger car registrations increased 13.6% over the same period.

Electric Vehicle Growth Accelerates
The June result marked a further acceleration from 203,417 BEV registrations recorded in May.
During the first six months of 2026, the EU registered 1,220,890 new battery-electric passenger cars, representing a 40.5% increase compared with the first half of 2025.
Battery-electric vehicles accounted for 20.7% of all new passenger car registrations during the period, up from 15.6% a year earlier, meaning roughly one in five new cars registered in the EU was fully electric.
Overall passenger car registrations reached nearly 5.9 million units between January and June, an increase of 5.7% year-on-year.

Germany Remains Largest EV Market
Three of the EU’s four largest battery-electric vehicle markets recorded strong growth during the first half of the year.
France posted the highest increase among the major markets, with registrations rising 62.9%, followed by Germany at 48% and Denmark at 41.2%. Belgium recorded more moderate growth of 8.2%.
According to ACEA, these four countries together accounted for 63% of all battery-electric vehicle registrations across the European Union.
Germany remained the largest individual BEV market in June with 84,057 registrations, an increase of 78.2% from a year earlier.
France followed with 55,851 registrations, up 93.5%, while the Netherlands registered 17,257 battery-electric cars (+42.2%), Denmark 16,996 (+40.3%), Italy 14,869 (+86.6%) and Spain 14,224 (+26.5%).
Hybrids Continue to Lead
Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) remained the largest powertrain category in the EU during the first half of the year with a 37.3% market share.
T&E Says EU Tariffs Shifted EV Imports but Chinese Brands Continue to Expand
Petrol-powered vehicles accounted for 22.2%, followed by battery-electric vehicles at 20.7%, plug-in hybrids at 9.8%, and diesel vehicles at 7.5%.
The combined market share of petrol and diesel vehicles declined from 37.8% a year earlier to 29.7%.
ACEA noted that its HEV category includes both full hybrids and mild hybrid vehicles and does not distinguish between different levels of electrification.
Tesla Records Higher Registrations
As a manufacturer focused exclusively on battery-electric vehicles, Tesla also recorded higher registrations during the month.
Across the combined EU, EFTA and UK markets, Tesla registered 52,563 vehicles in June, an increase of 49.9% compared with the same month last year.
For the first half of 2026, Tesla’s registrations reached 170,351 vehicles, up 54.6% year-on-year.
The June figures indicate continued momentum for Europe’s battery-electric vehicle market, with both registration volumes and market share increasing despite growth in the broader passenger car market.
