GM CEO Mary Barra : Making Cheap Electric Vehicles The Key To Competing With Tesla

General Motors (GM) boss Mary Barra said price was one of the determining factors to be able to win the competition with Tesla in the era of electric cars.

According to Barra, lowering the price of electric cars sold to the market is one of the company’s plans to compete.

“Remember, we don’t have to only sell electric cars. But we will also have electric vehicles at affordable prices,” said Barra, quoted from Autoevolution, Saturday (7/5/2022).

“Lower prices will certainly help attract more customers,” said Barra.

Previously, BMW CEO Oliver Zipse predicted that Tesla’s electric car sales dominance would end soon as conventional or traditional manufacturers began to develop many electric-powered models.

Tesla delivered nearly 500,000 vehicles last year, up 36 percent from 2019. The growth came amid a global pandemic and sent Tesla shares soaring.

“It will not be easy for Tesla to stay afloat. Because other industries are moving forward quickly,” said Oliver Zipse, as quoted by Automotive News.

What the BMW boss said was seen as a form of confidence from the old players in the automotive industry.

Including the fact that the German manufacturer continues to add to its lineup of electric models through the BMW X1, BMW 5 Series and 7 Series, and will introduce a new flagship model BMW iX.
