Azienda Trasporti Messina has taken delivery of 29 electric buses from Iveco Bus, further expanding the electrification of its public transport fleet in the Sicilian city of Messina.
The latest additions increase the number of battery-electric buses operated by the municipal transport company to 97 units, representing about 42% of its total fleet of 232 buses.
The newly delivered vehicles include 18 standard 12-metre buses and 11 shorter buses measuring 9.5 metres. All vehicles are designed primarily for depot charging via cable connection, while the 12-metre buses are also equipped with pantograph systems that enable opportunity charging.
Iveco Bus is expected to deliver an additional 18 electric buses to the operator by June 2026. The next batch will include 12 articulated buses intended mainly for use on the city’s Shuttle line, along with six eight-metre midibuses.
Alongside the Iveco vehicles, the fleet of Azienda Trasporti Messina already includes electric buses supplied by BYD and Karsan.
Carla Grillo, President of ATM, said the operator has accelerated the transition toward low-emission public transport in recent years. “ATM’s green fleet is continuously growing, thanks to strategic decisions taken since 2020 in synergy with the Municipality of Messina,” she said. “Today, the company has an increasingly defined green identity and is progressing along the path of ecological transition at a pace above the national average.”
