The Mercedes-Benz CLA has been named European Car of the Year 2026, following a vote by an international jury of automotive journalists at the Brussels Motor Show 2026, underscoring the German automaker’s push to expand its next generation of electric vehicles.
The all-electric version of the redesigned compact sedan won the title with 320 points, outperforming 34 rival models and emerging ahead of six finalists. Voting was conducted by 60 automotive journalists from 23 European countries, according to the European Car of the Year jury.

Mercedes-Benz said the award reflects strong market interest in the electric CLA, which began European deliveries in mid-2025. The automaker reports that order volumes have exceeded expectations, with its order book extending into the second half of 2026.

“Jurors from across Europe have confirmed what our customers have been telling us: the CLA is a game-changer, delivering outstanding efficiency and effortless intelligence,” said Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG.

The flagship electric variant, the CLA 250+ with EQ Technology, is rated for up to 792 km of WLTP driving range and delivers 200 kW of output. Mercedes-Benz reports combined energy consumption of 14.1–12.2 kWh per 100 km under WLTP testing, positioning the model for long-distance travel without intermediate charging stops on routes such as Berlin to Brussels or Bremen to Munich.
An 800-volt electrical architecture enables rapid DC charging, allowing the vehicle to add up to 325 km of range in around 10 minutes, the company said.

The CLA also marks the debut of MB.OS, Mercedes-Benz’s new operating system, paired with an updated MBUX infotainment platform featuring artificial intelligence integration. The software architecture is expected to underpin future compact models as the brand increases its focus on digital features alongside electrification.
The recognition comes as Mercedes-Benz marks the start of its 140th anniversary, dating back to Carl Benz’s 1886 patent of the first automobile, while continuing to expand its electric vehicle portfolio across Europe and other key markets.
