The Canadian government has just announced interim sales targets for zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs). The first interim target is for ZEV sales to reach 20% by 2026 followed by 60% by 2030. Before finally reaching the goal of achieving 100% ZEV sales by 2035.
New registration data from Statistics Canada shows that by 2021 5.2% of all new vehicles registered in Canada will be ZEVs.
This percentage increased very significantly compared to 2020 which amounted to 3.5% of all registered new vehicles.
Overall Quebec accounts for 42.8% of all new ZEV registrations, followed by British Columbia with 27.7%.
Ontario is in third place, which puts the three provinces accounting for 93.4% of newly registered ZEVs in Canada.
The statistics above include plug-in hybrids. Meanwhile, when counting battery electric vehicles (BEV), a total of 58,726 were registered in 2021, up from 39,036 in 2020.
New ZEV registrations for Q4 2021 saw a decline in registration numbers for most Canadian provinces.
The only province that differed was Ontario, which did not have a provincial ZEV purchase incentive but was able to increase ZEV registrations from 5,162 in Q3 to 6,139 in Q4.
These numbers should only increase in 2022, as more and more criteria vehicles (minivans, light pick-up trucks, and SUVs) get the iZEV discount.
