A heavily camouflaged prototype believed to be the next-generation BYD Dolphin has been spotted testing on public roads in China, suggesting the compact electric hatchback is set for significant updates. The current Dolphin, which remains China’s top-selling compact EV with 21,888 units sold in September, is expected to undergo a major mechanical and technological overhaul for the 2026 model year.
According to a Chinese automotive source, the upcoming Dolphin will likely adopt BYD’s cell-to-body (CTB) battery integration technology — a feature seen in higher-end BYD models — allowing improved rigidity and energy efficiency. The model is also expected to feature a redesigned rear suspension, potentially a four-link or five-link system, to enhance ride comfort and handling dynamics.

Reports indicate the addition of a rear-wheel-drive configuration, a front trunk, and higher-output motors paired with a larger battery pack. Industry observers anticipate that long-range rear-wheel-drive and hybrid variants could debut in the second quarter of 2026. Preliminary specifications suggest the top trim could exceed 520 km on the CLTC cycle, powered by BYD’s upgraded Blade Battery 2.0, which is designed to retain up to 82% capacity in temperatures as low as –30°C.
Inside, the 2026 Dolphin is expected to feature a cleaner, minimalist dashboard with dual-tone seating and a large floating central touchscreen. It will reportedly run BYD’s latest DiLink 5.0 infotainment platform powered by the Qualcomm 8295 processor, offering ultra-fast voice response times of 0.8 seconds and optional Level 2+ driver assistance with highway navigation on autopilot (NOA).

The exterior design is likely to evolve within BYD’s “Ocean Aesthetics” styling language, featuring slimmer headlights, smaller air intakes, and a more refined rear section with full-width taillights. Despite the updates, overall dimensions are expected to remain close to the current model at 4,280 mm in length, 1,770 mm in width, and 1,570 mm in height, with a 2,700 mm wheelbase.
The new Dolphin is projected to debut between June and August 2026, with pricing expected to remain competitive between 99,800 and 129,800 yuan (about 14,000 to 18,200 USD). The current 2025 Dolphin, launched earlier this year, offers up to 520 km range and has maintained strong sales momentum across China and export markets.
