Tesla said that its Robotaxi application is now available for download on Apple devices, signaling a potential expansion of its ride-hailing service beyond the current invitation-only pilot. An Android version of the app is expected to launch soon, the company added.
The app allows Tesla owners and users to sign in with a Tesla account to call a vehicle, start and end rides, control climate and music, and request support.
While the rollout expands access to the platform, rides are still not fully driverless. Tesla’s Robotaxi service launched in Austin, Texas, on June 22 and more recently expanded to the Bay Area, but all vehicles currently operate with a driver behind the wheel.
Since its initial launch, the pilot program has included a limited fleet of Model Ys equipped with Full Self-Driving software, initially numbering 10 to 20 vehicles and doubling in recent weeks.
The service operates independently of traditional ride-hailing networks, relying solely on Tesla’s own Robotaxi app rather than partnering with companies like Uber.
Fixed fares have been offered, ranging from $4.20 initially to $6.90 after expansion, although it is unclear if the pricing will remain the same in future broader deployments.
The rollout comes as Tesla expands its Austin service area to 173 square miles and modifies safety features, moving highway safety monitors from the front passenger seat to the driver’s seat.
The pilot program has faced scrutiny after videos surfaced online showing Robotaxis driving erratically, prompting an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
