Volkswagen said it has begun limited series production of the ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE, a special edition electric model built at its plants in Zwickau and Dresden, Saxony. The car, created in collaboration with sports fashion brand BOGNER FIRE+ICE, is a modern tribute to the Golf II Fire and Ice of the 1990s.
Only 1,990 units of the vehicle will be produced, a reference to the year the original Golf II Fire and Ice was launched. “We are confident that this special edition will follow on seamlessly from the surprise success of the 1990s,” said Danny Auerswald, spokesman of the board of management at Volkswagen Saxony.
The ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE offers two performance options, with outputs of 210 kW (286 PS) and 240 kW (326 PS). The more powerful version accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds and reaches a top speed of 200 km/h. Both are equipped with a 79 kWh lithium-ion battery providing a WLTP range of up to 591 km, with charging speeds of up to 185 kW at fast-charging stations.
Since its launch in 2019, more than 350,000 ID.3 units have been manufactured in Saxony, Volkswagen said. Uwe Kunstmann, chairman of the General Works Council of Volkswagen Saxony, noted that models like the FIRE+ICE help sustain demand. “Attractive special models like the FIRE+ICE ensure demand from customers, secure production capacity and safeguard employment,” he said.
The ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE, priced from €56,020 in Germany, is available in nearly 40 markets, including La Réunion and French Guiana. Volkswagen said sporty GTX models account for about one in ten ID.3 sales worldwide.
