BYD has launched the Atto 2 in Nepal, strengthening its presence in the South Asian market with the introduction of a second new energy vehicle (NEV) in the country this month.
The Atto 2, a compact pure electric SUV known domestically in China as the Yuan Up, was unveiled on August 19 at the NADA auto show in Kathmandu. Its arrival follows the August 6 launch of the Atto 1 hatchback, marketed in China as the Seagull, underlining BYD’s strategy to diversify its lineup in Nepal with both entry-level and compact SUV offerings.
Priced from 4.399 million Nepalese rupees ($31,410), the Atto 2 becomes BYD’s seventh NEV model to enter the Nepalese market. The SUV features a 51.13-kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack with a WLTP range of 345 kilometers, offering a higher capacity than the Chinese version and giving local buyers extended driving range. In China, the Yuan Up is available in four variants starting from RMB 74,800 ($10,450).
The Atto 2 joins a growing portfolio of BYD vehicles available in Nepal through local distributor Cimex Inc. The lineup now includes the Atto 1, Atto 2, Atto 3 SUV (known in China as the Yuan Plus), the Dolphin hatchback, the Seal sedan, and the M6 MPV. This expansion highlights BYD’s efforts to position itself across multiple vehicle segments to appeal to a broad base of Nepalese customers.
BYD has been active in Nepal for several years, beginning with the addition of its e6 model to the country’s presidential fleet in 2018. Its official entry into the passenger vehicle market came in October 2022 with the launch of the Atto 3, which remains one of its most prominent models in the country.
