Energy company St1 said on Thursday it has converted a Shell-branded petrol station in Ylöjärvi, Finland, into the country’s first location dedicated solely to charging electric vehicles, as it accelerates its rollout of high-power charging infrastructure across the Nordics.
The site will feature ultra-fast chargers with output of up to 400 kW, while maintaining its restaurant and car wash. St1 already operates fast-charging stations at 41 locations in Finland, including nine opened this year, along with 37 in Sweden and 30 in Norway. The company launched its first all-electric site in Oslo earlier this year.
The conversion comes as St1 phases out its Shell licensing agreement, under which around 630 Shell-branded sites across the Nordic region will be rebranded. The company said its unified network is expected to include around 1,250 energy stations. The Ylöjärvi site will be rebranded under St1’s “One Brand” strategy in autumn 2025.
St1 has received funding support from the European Union’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) programme for charging infrastructure in Finland and Sweden, as well as backing from the Finnish Energy Authority. “This marks the first time in Finland that we’re continuing operations at a station without any liquid fuels,” said Juha Vanninen, St1’s head of retail in Finland.
