An unusual crash involving a Ford Mustang Mach-E occurred yesterday in the San Francisco Bay Area, with the incident captured on video by another driver.
The footage shows the electric crossover traveling at speed along a highway while scraping against the side wall before colliding with another vehicle at an entrance ramp.
The video, recorded by a commuter in San Carlos, depicts a green Mach-E with hazard lights on, maintaining contact with the wall. The driver appears to have both hands raised and off the wheel. As the vehicle reached an on-ramp, it crossed into the path of a red Mitsubishi Mirage merging from the right.
The collision caused the smaller vehicle to overturn. Both cars came to rest with airbags deployed, and both drivers were reported to have avoided serious injury.
The circumstances surrounding the crash remain unclear. It is unknown whether the driver experienced a mechanical malfunction, a medical emergency, or another issue.
In electric vehicles like the Mach-E, the steering and braking systems generally allow the driver to override any driver-assist functions, and automatic emergency braking is designed to activate in certain scenarios. In the event of a system fault, an emergency stop can sometimes be initiated by repeatedly pressing the parking brake button.
A witness reported that earlier in the incident, the Mach-E had been in contact with the central barrier, potentially in an attempt to slow the vehicle.
