Huawei and Chery have signed a new cooperation agreement to deepen their joint venture Luxeed, marking the start of what the companies call “Phase 2.0” for the electric vehicle brand. The agreement was signed in Shenzhen on Wednesday, with Huawei’s consumer business head Richard Yu and Chery chairman Yin Tongyue in attendance.
As part of the expanded collaboration, Luxeed said it will invest more than 10 billion yuan ($1.4 billion) and grow its research and development team to 5,000 members to strengthen its position in China’s competitive new energy vehicle (NEV) sector. The company has also established a dedicated NEV entity for Luxeed, which will operate independently in manufacturing, sales, and after-sales services.
Luxeed plans to launch multiple new models to diversify its product lineup and accelerate its long-term development. The brand debuted its first model, the all-electric Luxeed S7 sedan, in November 2023, followed by the R7 coupe SUV in September 2024—its first SUV built under Huawei’s Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance (HIMA) platform.
Pre-sales of refreshed versions of the S7 and R7 will begin on August 8, with official market launches expected in September, according to local outlet LatePost.
The latest agreement reflects Chery’s growing commitment to the Luxeed brand, as it shifts resources to expand its EV portfolio. According to a report by 21jingji, Luxeed is developing a new MPV, codenamed “EHV,” based on Chery’s E0X-L platform. The vehicle is anticipated to become the first multi-purpose vehicle under the HIMA business when it launches in the first half of 2026. Development of Chery’s Exeed Sterra E08 MPV has been halted, with some team members reassigned to support Luxeed’s MPV initiative, the report added.
Besides Luxeed, Huawei’s HIMA partnership network includes Aito (Seres Group), Stelato (BAIC Group), Shangjie (SAIC Motor), and Maextro (Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Group).
