Volvo Trucks has received an order for 110 Volvo VNR Electric trucks from global logistics company Maersk. The deal adds to an earlier order of 16 vehicles of the same model and marks the largest commercial order to date for Volvo Trucks electric trucks in North America (VTNA).
Orders for a total of 126 electric trucks from the Performance Team (Maersk Group) will be operational for the first time in the second quarter of 2022. The Class 8 electric trucks will be used in the California area, United States (US) for various transportation assignments, serving drayage ports and warehousing distribution routes.
“Volvo Trucks is excited to continue to collaborate with Maersk in achieving its fleet sustainability goals and to play a key role in the organization’s continued large-scale investment in electromobility solutions,” said Peter Voorhoeve, President of Volvo Trucks North America (VTNA).
The Volvo VNR Electric has an operating range of up to 440 km and energy storage of up to 565 kWh. The truck can be charged 80% in 90 minutes with the six-battery pack and 60 minutes with the four-battery version. The Volvo VNR Electric is manufactured at Volvo Trucks’ New River Valley plant in Virginia, which is the exclusive manufacturer of all Volvo trucks in North America.
Globally, the Swedish automaker has set an ambitious target of transitioning up to 50% of its entire fleet to be electrified by 2030.
Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks said that With a total of six electric truck models produced this year, Volvo Trucks has the most complete electric suite in the global trucking industry, covering everything from municipal distribution and waste handling, to construction transport and regional haulage.
“We are determined to lead the transportation industry’s electrical transformation. Volumes are still low, but we are seeing growing interest in Europe, North America and the rest of the world as well.”
Volvo Trucks, continued Roger, is the market leader for electric heavy trucks by 2021 in Europe with a 42% market share and also has a leading position in North America.
“In 2021 we received orders, including letters of intent to buy, for more than 1,100 trucks in more than 20 countries. This is clearly a key competitive advantage to be able to offer zero-emission electric transportation,” he concluded.
