Kia in November 2021 introduced the second-generation Niro, but we’ll have to wait until January 2022 to find out the technical specifications – even then for the hybrid model.
Now, after two months the Korean manufacturer has just released detailed technical specifications for the 2022 Kia Niro plug-in hybrid and pure electric.
Technical specifications of the 2022 Kia Niro PHEV
For the 2022 model the Kia Niro PHEV uses the same 1.6 liter engine as its HEV sibling. The PHEV model has a new six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, which is made 2.3 kilograms lighter by eliminating the reverse gear. For the purpose of moving backwards, it will be done with an electric drive.
The 2022 Kia Niro PHEV gets a 62 kW motor to replace the 32 kW setup on the HEV model. This makes the combined output rise from 139 hp to 180 hp.
While the old Niro PHEV had an 8.9 kWh battery, the 2022 Kia Niro PHEV has an 11.1 kWh battery pack that has a range of up to 40.3 miles. This range will only be obtained if using 16-inch wheels. For larger wheel sizes the reach will decrease because it can cause efficiency barriers.
2022 Kia Niro EV technical specifications
The 2022 Kia Niro EV comes with an output of 201 hp and near-instant torque of 255 Nm (188 lb-ft). With this electric power, the 2022 Kia Niro EV can accelerate from 0 to 62 miles/hour (100 km/h) in 7.8 seconds, and have a top speed of 104 miles/hour (167 km/h).
The 2022 Kia Niro EV uses a lithium-ion polymer battery with a capacity of 64.8 kWh. For a full charge the 2022 Kia Niro EV can reach 287 miles (463 km) in a WLTP cycle.
Recharging from 10 to 80 percent takes about 43 minutes using a DC fast charger
The 2022 Kia Niro EV can take advantage of bidirectional charging, but only for small devices and limited to 3 kWh.
In terms of luggage capacity, the 2022 Kia Niro EV is more practical than the previous version because it has a front trunk that can accommodate 20 liters.
The rear cargo area of the 2022 Kia Niro EV can load 475 liters, an increase of 24 liters compared to the previous model.
