ZF has secured an order to supply several thousand units of its AxTrax 2 electric axle drive to a major manufacturer in India. This order, which spans several years, will see the AxTrax 2 integrated into a new fleet of emission-free intercity buses, marking a significant development in India’s push towards sustainable public transportation.
The AxTrax 2 electric axle is designed to replace the conventional engine, transmission, and axle components in commercial vehicles, offering an efficient solution for electrification. Capable of delivering 210 kW of continuous power, the electric axle is part of ZF’s modular e-mobility kit, which integrates in-house developed components into an innovative, compact, and lightweight axle-based system.

“This nomination demonstrates how leading manufacturers across the globe are increasingly attracted to our comprehensive technology portfolio,” said Prof. Dr. Peter Laier, Member of the ZF Board of Management, head of the Commercial Vehicle Solutions division, and responsible for the India Region. “It shows how our tailored solutions support manufacturers at every stage of their electrification journey, enabling them to accelerate their transformation towards cleaner, more efficient mobility.”
ZF has increasingly focused on global markets, with a component factory opened in China last year and plans for a joint factory with Wolfspeed in Germany currently on hold. Rumors earlier this year indicated that ZF was considering spinning off its electric drive unit due to financial pressures.

India has been investing heavily in the electrification of its transportation sector, including proposals for a potential ban on internal combustion engines in Delhi. Recently, the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh issued a tender for nearly 300 electric buses, along with the required charging infrastructure. In 2024, over 3,600 electric buses were registered across the country, reflecting a growing commitment to sustainable mobility.
