Dutch fuel cell system developer and integrator zepp.solutions has revealed the creation of a hydrogen-powered truck called Europa. Based on a well-known diesel truck manufacturer’s proven chassis, the first examples of the Europa are expected to be on the road in the final quarter of 2023. Although the specific diesel model that serves as the base has not been revealed, the published rendering has led many to believe that it is a Mercedes Actros.
The Europa is a 4×2 tractor unit that will be equipped with 350-bar hydrogen tanks, which will hold over 50 kilograms of hydrogen, offering a range of over 700 kilometers. The usable electrical energy content after conversion is expected to be more than 900 kWh. In 2024, a variant with 700-bar tanks will be added to the lineup, with a range of well over 1,000 kilometers and a hydrogen capacity of 80 kilograms, equivalent to 1,450 kWh of electrical energy. However, zepp.solutions acknowledges that the infrastructure for 700-bar refueling still needs improvement in Europe, making the 350-bar version the preferred option for the first customers.

The X150 fuel cell module and hydrogen tanks used in the Europa are also available as standalone units for integration into other vehicles. The system allows for additional stacks and/or modules to be added for improved efficiency and range.
The Europa is intended for use in the European transport sector and was developed in compliance with EU regulations. As a zero-emission articulated vehicle of class N3, it has a permissible gross weight of 42 tonnes, allowing for a similar payload to diesel-powered counterparts. As a tractor, it is designed to transport a 45-foot container.
