Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Zeekr is reportedly set to unveil a mainstream SUV, codenamed CX1E, hot on the heels of its recent debut, the Zeekr 007 sedan. AutoPix, a local media outlet, revealed yesterday that the SUV is currently in the development stage, with trial production scheduled for the first quarter of 2024 and mass production expected to commence later that year.

Following the niche market approach with models like the Zeekr 001, Zeekr 009, and Zeekr X, Zeekr’s foray into the mainstream EV market is a response to evolving consumer preferences. The CX1E is poised to compete with popular models such as the Tesla Model Y, signaling Zeekr’s intention to establish a foothold in the growing mass-market electric vehicle segment.

Founded in 2021, Zeekr initially targeted niche markets, delivering models like the shooting brake-style Zeekr 001, the MPV Zeekr 009, and the premium compact SUV Zeekr X. The Zeekr 001 has been a standout performer, accounting for 67 percent of Zeekr’s total sales in the first 10 months of the year, with 61,500 units sold.

The recently unveiled Zeekr 007 marks Zeekr’s entry into the mainstream market, with pre-sales already underway at a starting price of RMB 229,900 ($32,200). The shift in strategy is attributed to Zeekr’s desire to compete directly with models like the Tesla Model 3.

Zeekr’s manufacturing is spread across three factories, with the Hangzhou Bay plant being the primary facility for the Zeekr 001, Zeekr 009, and Zeekr 001FR. Meanwhile, the Ningbo Meishan plant, previously focused on Lynk & Co 09 production, will now be tasked with manufacturing the Zeekr 007.

Looking ahead, Zeekr plans to introduce another model, codenamed CC1E, described as a touring version of the Zeekr 007. The expansion into mainstream markets is expected to alleviate the sales pressure on the Zeekr 001. Additionally, a facelift for the Zeekr 001 is anticipated in 2024.

As part of its growth strategy, Zeekr aims to bolster its sales network, with plans to add more than 200 new outlets in 2024. Over 100 of these outlets will be non-direct Zeekr Homes, according to reports, signaling Zeekr’s commitment to an extensive and diversified sales presence.
