Yutong, the Chinese bus maker, has taken the lead in the European electric bus market, beating out established local manufacturers such as Mercedes and Volvo. According to the consultancy firm Chatrou CME Solutions, Yutong sold 479 electric buses in Europe in 2022, representing an increase of 58 percent from the previous year and capturing an 11.5 percent share of the market.
BYD-ADL, a joint venture between Chinese firm BYD and British firm Alexander Dennis, came in second with 465 registrations, while Mercedes trailed with 405. The rise of electric buses in Europe reflects a growing trend towards environmentally friendly public transportation. In 2022, a total of 4,152 electric buses were registered across the continent, representing a year-on-year increase of 26 percent. The United Kingdom led the pack with 685 registrations, followed by Germany with 581 and France with 549.
As Europe continues to prioritize sustainability and reduce its carbon footprint, the demand for electric buses is likely to grow even more, providing opportunities for both established players and new entrants to the market. With its strong showing in 2022, Yutong has firmly established itself as a leader in the European electric bus market and is well positioned to take advantage of this trend in the years to come.
