Xpeng has garnered over 30,000 pre-orders for its upcoming Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV), the X9, ahead of its official launch. The company made the announcement on its social media channels, highlighting the robust initial acceptance of the X9 model.
The X9 was unveiled by Xpeng on the first day of the Guangzhou Auto Show on November 17, initiating pre-sales with a starting price of RMB 388,000 yuan ($54,650). With deliveries scheduled to commence in January, Xpeng plans to officially launch the X9 on January 1, with the launch event beginning at 6:30 pm Beijing Time. During the event, the official price for the X9 is expected to be disclosed.
Measuring 5,293 mm in length, 1,988 mm in width, and 1,785 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,160 mm, the Xpeng X9 is designed to offer a spacious interior. Notably, it features active rear-wheel steering and a turning diameter of 10.8 meters, touted as the smallest in its class. The X9’s turning radius surpasses that of Xpeng’s P7 sedan, and its HD-map-independent XNGP assisted driving capability enhances maneuverability, as highlighted by Xpeng Chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng during a November 15 analyst call following the earnings announcement.
He Xiaopeng expressed confidence in the X9’s market performance, stating, “Deliveries of the X9 will begin in early January 2024, and I expect the X9 to be the No. 1 seller in the large pure electric MPV market.”
Xpeng’s manufacturing approach for the X9 involves utilizing large integrated die-casting machines for constructing the front and rear bodies. The company’s Guangzhou plant houses a 7,000-tonne die-casting machine and a 12,000-tonne die-casting machine, emphasizing its commitment to advanced production methods.
As Xpeng gears up for the official launch of the X9 and responds to the substantial pre-order interest, the market dynamics in the large pure electric MPV segment are poised for an interesting shift in the coming months.
