Xpeng announced the launch of the 2024 Xpeng P5, catching many industry observers off guard. This fresh addition to their sedan lineup joins the flagship P7, which recently received a facelift with the P7i earlier this year.

Xpeng’s latest offering, the 2024 P5, departs from convention by presenting just two distinct options: the Xpeng P5 500 Plus and the Xpeng P5 500 Pro. This marked departure from their usual plethora of choices represents a significant shift in Xpeng’s strategy.

Previously, the Xpeng P5 had a more diverse range, including the Xpeng P5 460G+, starting at RMB 156,900 ($21,480), and the Xpeng P5 460E+ at a starting price of RMB 174,900. It also featured the Xpeng P5 550G, Xpeng P5 550E, and Xpeng P5 550P, each with varying price points. The distinguishing factor in their nomenclature was the CLTC range, with the “550” variants offering a 550-kilometer range.

However, the 2024 P5 streamlines these options by eliminating the three versions with a 550-kilometer range, offering only two versions, both with a CLTC range of 500 kilometers. Intriguingly, the pricing for these new variants mirrors that of the previous 460-kilometer range models, with the Xpeng P5 500 Plus and Xpeng P5 500 Pro priced at RMB 156,900 and RMB 174,900, respectively.

Notably, Xpeng has taken a bold step by completely removing the LiDAR option for the P5, a feature that was available in some higher trims of the model when it initially launched in September 2021. Back then, Xpeng marketed the P5 as the world’s first production car with LiDAR technology, a claim that set it apart.

Interestingly, the P5’s LiDAR inclusion had caused some confusion within Xpeng’s lineup. While the P5 featured LiDAR, the pricier P7 did not. However, the latest iteration of the P7, the P7i, now offers a LiDAR option.

Over the past couple of years, LiDAR technology, known for its enhanced obstacle detection capabilities in assisted driving systems, has become a standard feature in high-end Chinese EV models.

On a technological front, the new Xpeng P5 is equipped with NVIDIA’s Xavier smart driving chip in the Pro version, enabling highway NGP (Navigation Guided Pilot) functionality.

In terms of dimensions, the 2024 P5 maintains the same footprint as its predecessor, measuring 4,860 mm in length, 1,840 mm in width, and 1,520 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,768 mm. Notably, it boasts a slightly extended length, up by 52 mm.

The P5 continues to rely on front-wheel drive, powered by a front electric motor delivering a peak power of 155 kW and a peak torque of 310 Nm. Acceleration from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour takes a respectable 7.5 seconds.
