Xpeng Expands Recruitment for Robotaxi Operations Amid Industry Developments

Xpeng is accelerating its efforts in the robotaxi sector by launching a recruitment drive aimed at hiring professionals with global robotaxi market experience, according to a report by local media outlet Sina Tech. The Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer is offering high-level positions, including director of operations and senior manager of operations, as part of its push to expand in the autonomous driving space.

The role of robotaxi operations director will focus on building business systems and overseeing the execution of robotaxi mobility services. Candidates for the position must have experience working at a tier-1 global robotaxi company, as well as a background in managing unmanned robotaxi operations and self-driving systems. The position also requires experience leading a team of 20-50 people, according to the report.

Xpeng is offering a monthly salary between RMB 40,000 ($5,650) and RMB 60,000, with a total annual compensation of up to RMB 1 million, including 15 months of salary.

The company’s increased focus on robotaxis comes as Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) is set to announce its own robotaxi plans during an event on October 10. Meanwhile, Xpeng is expected to reveal its new P7+ electric sedan, though it’s unclear if the company will discuss its robotaxi strategy at the launch.

Xpeng began exploring the robotaxi market in late 2022, starting with the licensing of its G9 SUV for open road robotaxi testing in Guangzhou. Xpeng Chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng stated earlier this year that while the company aims to launch a “very competitive robotaxi in 2026,” it will not handle operations directly but will work with partners to drive the business forward.
