Xpeng has reaffirmed its commitment to a vision-only approach for its autonomous driving systems, denying recent media reports that suggested the company may reintroduce LiDAR technology in future vehicle models.
The clarification followed a report from a technology-focused WeChat account, which cited a source close to LiDAR supplier RoboSense. The report indicated that Xpeng might reconsider using LiDAR due to challenges encountered in complex driving scenarios. It also suggested the company may integrate LiDAR as a backup system in future Level 4 autonomous driving phases, while continuing to rely on vision-only solutions for Level 3 applications.
Xpeng, however, has pushed back on the report. According to the company, its current strategy remains focused on camera-based perception systems, and there are no plans to return to LiDAR-equipped models. The company views recent claims as inaccurate and warned that any further dissemination of false information may prompt legal and regulatory responses.
Xpeng began transitioning away from LiDAR in late 2024, starting with the launch of the P7+ sedan. This shift was part of a broader move toward a Tesla-like full self-driving approach. Subsequent vehicle updates, including the G6 and G9 SUVs, the X9 MPV, and the newer Mona M03 Max and G7 SUV, have all adopted vision-only configurations.
The company is also reported to be evaluating its product line strategy for the second half of the year, with potential adjustments to production volumes. Despite external speculation, Xpeng has not confirmed any changes to its current hardware or product development roadmap.
