XPeng Motors is making strides in its self-driving technology. According to XPeng chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng, the automaker’s self-driving ADAS navigation-guided pilot (NGP) is undergoing testing on German roads and showing “great promise,” paving the way for an XNGP rollout across Europe.
XPeng’s Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), initially called navigation guided pilot (NGP), has evolved over the years. It was first applied to highway driving scenarios before expanding to operate on congested urban roads with City NGP.
After demonstrating City NGP’s capabilities, XPeng began piloting its next self-driving phase – XNGP. Launched in March 2023, XPeng touted it as “the most advanced and capable in China,” positioning itself as a formidable competitor to Tesla.
XPeng Motors has rapidly deployed self-driving XNGP access to drivers in China, now available in 259 cities, with more cities in the pipeline. The company is beta testing a new feature called Valet AI.
While expanding its EV lineup in new markets, XPeng Motors is also preparing to introduce NGP to customers outside China. He Xiaopeng shared encouraging test footage of XPeng NGP in Germany on LinkedIn, indicating that XNGP is nearly road-ready for Europe. He stated:
“Extensively tested in China, our ADAS software has proved that it can smoothly operate abroad, another step towards our goal of making advanced smart driving accessible worldwide.”
The video footage demonstrates an XPeng EV navigating German highways hands-free, recognizing passing cars, and overtaking a large semi-truck, at speeds between 75 and 120 km/h (47-75 mph).
XPeng intends to share further details of NGP’s progress in Europe during the Beijing Autoshow, beginning next week.
