Xiaomi has entered the electric vehicle (EV) market with its first model, the SU7 electric sedan, which was launched today in Beijing. Priced competitively, the SU7 undercuts Tesla’s Model 3 while offering superior features.
“We are excited to introduce the Xiaomi SU7, a vehicle designed to exceed expectations and redefine the electric vehicle experience,” said Lei Jun, founder, chairman, and CEO of Xiaomi.
The SU7 comes in three variants — Standard, Pro, and Max — with prices starting at RMB 215,900 ($29,870). This places the SU7 in direct competition with Tesla’s Model 3, with the Standard version priced RMB 30,000 lower than the entry-level Model 3 in China.
Customers can reserve the SU7 by paying a refundable deposit of RMB 5,000, with deliveries scheduled to begin in April and May.
Key features of the SU7 include a mid-to-large-sized sedan body, with the Max variant built on an 800 V platform for faster charging. The Standard and Pro variants offer 350 kilometers of range on a 15-minute charge, while the Max variant boasts 510 kilometers of range in the same time frame.
The Standard and Pro versions are single-motor rear-wheel-drive models, with the Max version featuring dual motors for faster acceleration. The SU7 Max can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.78 seconds.
Xiaomi’s smart driving system, divided into Xiaomi Pilot Pro and Xiaomi Pilot Max, offers advanced assisted driving features, with the latter incorporating LiDAR technology for enhanced capabilities.
Despite the increasingly crowded EV market in China, Xiaomi is confident in its ability to compete. “The pricing of the SU7, significantly lower than that of the Tesla Model 3, demonstrates our commitment to the EV space,” Lei stated.
Xiaomi aims to become one of the world’s top 5 carmakers within 15-20 years and aims to be a top-tier player in the smart driving space by 2024.
