Waymo announced on Tuesday it is expanding its autonomous ride-hailing service across new regions of the San Francisco peninsula and parts of Silicon Valley, following a recent regulatory approval from California authorities.

The company will begin operating in Brisbane, South San Francisco, San Bruno, Millbrae, and Burlingame, and is extending service into more parts of Palo Alto and Menlo Park. Starting Wednesday, Waymo will also expand its Los Angeles service to include Playa del Rey, Ladera Heights, Echo Park, Silver Lake, and the entirety of Sunset Boulevard.

Although Waymo has been cleared to operate in San Jose, it has not yet disclosed when services will commence in the city.

“Waymo is the only commercial robotaxi provider with paying passengers in the United States,” the company said. With a fleet of more than 1,500 autonomous vehicles, Waymo currently conducts over 250,000 rides weekly in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Austin.

The expansion comes as Tesla gears up to launch its own paid robotaxi offering in Austin, Texas, highlighting a growing race to commercialize autonomous mobility solutions.
