Volvo Cars said global sales of electrified models fell 2% in September compared with a year earlier, as weaker demand in Europe and the United States offset strong gains in China.
The Swedish carmaker sold 29,611 electrified vehicles during the month, including fully electric and plug-in hybrid cars, out of a total 63,212 units. That marked a 1% rise in overall global sales but an 11% decline in electrified deliveries for the January-September period, which totaled 227,317 units.

In Europe, electrified sales fell 6% in September to 19,474 vehicles, with fully electric models down 15% while plug-in hybrids rose 6%. Across the first nine months of the year, European electrified sales dropped 17%, reflecting a sharper 32% fall in battery electric cars.
In the U.S., total sales rose 3% in September to 8,758 cars, but electrified deliveries declined 21% year-on-year. Plug-in hybrids tumbled 39%, while fully electric sales grew 52% to 1,009 units. For the nine-month period, electrified sales in the U.S. slipped 6%, despite a more than doubling of fully electric volumes.

China provided a rare bright spot, where electrified sales surged 48% to 2,021 units in September, led by plug-in hybrids. Fully electric volumes climbed 49% to 382 units in the month, though they remain down 39% year-to-date.
Globally, Volvo delivered 14,811 fully electric vehicles in September, a 3% decline, and 14,800 plug-in hybrids, down 1%. For the first nine months, fully electric sales dropped 21% to 105,137 units, while plug-in hybrid deliveries eased 1% to 122,180 units.
The XC60 continued to be Volvo’s top-selling model in September, with 20,496 units sold, followed by the XC40/EX40 at 15,904 and the XC90 at 8,252.

Looking ahead, Volvo said it will introduce a new hybrid model in the United States by the end of the decade, designed specifically for the local market and aimed at increasing output at its South Carolina plant.
The company also began production of the ES90, its first fully electric sedan with 800-volt technology, at the start of September. The model, developed for Europe, features Volvo’s new computing platform and is capable of receiving continuous software updates.
