Volvo Cars said on Tuesday it has started production of the ES90, its new fully electric sedan for European markets, marking what the company described as a major step in its transition to an all-electric lineup.
The ES90 is the first Volvo to feature 800-volt technology, enabling faster charging and extended driving range. The vehicle is powered by the automaker’s next-generation computing platform and Superset tech stack, which will allow the car to receive continuous software updates.
“The fully electric ES90 marks a major milestone as Volvo Cars steps into a new era of safety, sustainability and human-centric technology,” said Francesca Gamboni, chief industrial operations officer at Volvo Cars.
Volvo has opened order books for the ES90 in several European countries, with customer deliveries expected to begin later this year. The model will also be introduced in select Asia-Pacific markets. The vehicle is being built at the company’s Chengdu plant in China, which Volvo said operates with climate-neutral energy.
According to a July life cycle assessment, the ES90 carries one of the lowest carbon footprints among Volvo’s lineup. The model blends elements of a sedan, fastback, and SUV, with higher ground clearance and a spacious interior, which Volvo said positions it as a versatile option within its premium range.
