Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) has introduced two new battery-electric articulated haulers at the Bauma trade fair in Munich, marking what it says is a world-first in this vehicle segment.
The A30 Electric and A40 Electric models, with payload capacities of 29 and 39 tonnes respectively, are expected to operate for up to four hours on a single battery charge, the Swedish manufacturer said.

The launch represents a milestone in Volvo CE’s efforts to electrify heavy construction machinery. “Sixty years after Gravel Charlie, our first articulated hauler, these new electric machines mark the latest milestone in a series of hauler innovations,” the company said in a statement, referring to its original model introduced in the 1960s.
The A30 Electric features a 265 kW electric motor and a 245 kWh lithium-ion battery, while the larger A40 Electric is powered by a 350 kW motor with a 350 kWh battery pack. Both vehicles are designed for use in demanding environments such as mining, quarrying and construction.

According to Volvo CE, fast charging is supported at up to 350 kW, enabling a charge from 20% to 80% in approximately one hour.
Under optimal conditions, the haulers could run for as long as seven hours, although heavy-duty applications may require more frequent charging. Operators can monitor charging status, machine hours and energy consumption either on-site or remotely via the company’s My Equipment app.

The models are based on an updated hauler platform that integrates enhanced fleet management tools, advanced safety assistance systems and simplified maintenance procedures.
A limited number of A30 and A40 Electric haulers will be made available to selected European customers starting in 2026, with Volvo CE planning to scale up production in subsequent years.
