Volkswagen’s main factory in Wolfsburg, Germany, has been awarded the contract for producing an additional electric vehicle starting in 2026. The new car will be a compact SUV model and is expected to fill the gap until the company’s upcoming Trinity core model is ready for launch.

The Trinity’s development has been delayed due to software development problems, and it is not yet known if it will be built at the Wolfsburg factory or a new facility in the Warmenau district of the city.

The new electric SUV will be based on the company’s advanced MEB+ modular system, roughly the size of the current Tiguan, and developed and constructed at the Wolfsburg factory. The facility is also preparing to handle overflow production of the ID.3 from Zwickau. While VW has not released many details about the new vehicle, it is one of several MEB+ models the company plans to introduce in the coming years.

The ID.2 is expected to be developed into the ID.Golf for mass-market release in 2025, while the company is also working on a compact electric SUV for the US market positioned under the ID.4. However, these vehicles are likely to differ significantly from the Wolfsburg-produced model.

VW has recently replaced the head of its design unit with Andreas Mindt, who previously worked for Bentley. The company has also faced challenges due to the ongoing semiconductor shortage, which has prevented the use of heat pumps in its recent ID vehicles.
