PowerCo, Volkswagen’s battery subsidiary, has appointed Alexander Schmitt as its new Chief Procurement Officer and member of the Executive Board, effective 18 November. Schmitt replaces Jörg Teichmann, who is leaving the position by mutual agreement and will transition to another role within the Volkswagen Group.

The company did not disclose details on Teichmann’s future assignment or whether he will join a specific VW brand or take up responsibilities at group headquarters. Teichmann joined PowerCo in 2022 as one of its first board members and oversaw the creation of the procurement division during the company’s formative phase.

Schmitt previously held senior roles at mining group Anglo American and brings significant raw materials expertise to PowerCo. His responsibilities will include procurement of raw materials, components and machinery, alongside supplier management and value engineering across the company’s growing battery supply chain.

“With Alexander Schmitt, we have been able to win an absolute top expert in the raw materials sector,” said Thomas Schmall, Head of Volkswagen Group Components and Chairman of PowerCo SE’s Supervisory Board. Schmall added that Teichmann “has fundamentally built up the procurement department and established PowerCo as a relevant player in the global raw materials business,” contributing to the creation of a full supply chain “from mine to cell.”

The leadership change comes as PowerCo continues expanding its global supplier network and ramps up its battery cell production strategy, a central pillar of Volkswagen’s long-term electrification plans.
