Volkswagen has resolved the recall issue affecting nearly 100,000 ID.4 electric vehicles and is now resuming production and sales of the models.
The recall, initiated in September, was due to a door handle malfunction that allowed water to enter the circuit board, potentially causing the doors to open unexpectedly.
The production halt, which had impacted around 200 workers, was expected to last until the start of 2025. Now, three months later, the fix has been successfully implemented in some vehicles, with more being sent to dealerships and Volkswagen’s Tennessee factory for repairs.
Sales of the ID.4 began again this week, with some dealers already applying the fix to 10% of their inventory. A local dealership confirmed that cars with the updated fix are being sold again.
The recall affected model year 2021-2024 ID.4s, but owners were advised that they could continue driving their vehicles until the fix is applied.
Volkswagen has announced that the repair, which takes about four hours, will be performed free of charge. With the resolution in place, Volkswagen aims to re-establish the ID.4 as one of the top-selling electric vehicles in both the U.S. and Canada.
