Volkswagen Group has unveiled a new exit warning system designed to enhance safety when leaving a vehicle, particularly in inner-city traffic. The system aims to prevent potentially dangerous situations by warning both the driver and passengers about approaching road users from behind the parked Volkswagen vehicle.
Catering to the vulnerability of cyclists, the exit warning system covers not only the driver and front passenger doors but also provides protection for the rear doors. Utilizing two rear radar sensors located in the bumper (on the left and right), the system scans the area behind the vehicle and alerts passengers to potential dangers before a door handle is operated.
The warning process includes an LED light in the exterior mirror, serving as the initial warning level when a road user is detected. If a door opener is pressed despite the warning, the system temporarily prevents the door from opening. In the event that the door is still opened, an audible warning signal is activated.
Even after the vehicle is parked and turned off, the assist system remains active for three minutes to ensure coverage for all passengers exiting the vehicle.
The new ID.7, new Passat, and new Tiguan models from Volkswagen come standard with this exit warning system. For the ID.4 and ID.5, the system is available as an option, functioning similarly to the ID.7. The only variation is that the LED light in the exterior mirror is activated only when passengers operate one of the door handles in case of danger. The other warning levels, including the acoustic signal in the door and the electronic opening delay, remain consistent with the ID.7.
Volkswagen aims to make electric vehicles a significant portion of its sales by 2030, with at least 70 percent in Europe and a minimum of 50 percent in North America and China. Additionally, the brand plans to exclusively manufacture electric cars in Europe by the end of 2033.
