Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles said it will expand its manufacturing plant in Września, Poland, to prepare for the production of the next generation of its all-electric Crafter van, as the brand accelerates its electrification plans.
The company said two new production halls will be built as part of the project, with the foundation stone set to be laid in November 2025 and completion targeted for 2027. The Września facility, operated by Volkswagen Poznań, currently produces the Volkswagen Crafter, its sister model the MAN TGE, and their electric counterparts, the eCrafter and eTGE. The smaller VW Caddy is also assembled at the site, which will mark its tenth anniversary in 2026.

Volkswagen Poznań said all necessary permits for the expansion have been secured. “Expanding production for the next generation of our all-electric Crafter is the next logical step in electrifying our lineup,” said Stefan Mecha, CEO of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. “This new electric generation will further strengthen our position in the commercial vehicle segment.”
Stefanie Hegels, CEO of Volkswagen Poznań, said the expansion will include a “modern body shop and a battery warehouse” designed to meet the requirements of the upcoming electric Crafter. The company did not provide details on the new buildings’ size or future production capacity.
The Września plant spans 220 hectares, employs around 9,000 people, and operates with more than 1,300 robots in highly automated production processes. According to Volkswagen, the facility is powered entirely by green energy, supported by an on-site photovoltaic installation with a capacity of 18.3 MW, which supplies about a quarter of its annual electricity needs and can fully power operations in optimal conditions.
Piotr Olbryś, chairman of the Solidarność trade union at Volkswagen Poznań, said the decision “is a clear signal to our employees,” adding that producing next-generation electric vehicles “is a vital step in developing competencies that will help secure jobs in the future.”
