Volkswagen is discontinuing its gas-powered Touareg SUV after the 2026 model year, closing the chapter on its first luxury SUV introduced in 2002.

The model, developed alongside the Porsche Cayenne and sharing some powertrain components with the Lamborghini Urus, has sold over 1.2 million units across three generations and remains available in more than 39 countries.

The automaker is sending off the Touareg with a “FINAL EDITION” model, available for order until the end of March 2026, with prices starting at 75,025 euros ($87,500). The special edition includes laser-engraved “FINAL EDITION” lettering on the rear door windows and gear lever, along with multicolor ambient lighting as standard for higher trims.

Although the combustion-engine Touareg will be retired, Volkswagen has hinted at the possibility of an electric successor, noting that “production of the Touareg combustion model ends in 2026.” The brand has not provided further details, leaving open speculation about a potential ID.Touareg EV.

In the U.S., the Touareg has not been sold since 2017, with the Atlas taking its place as Volkswagen’s top-selling SUV. Through September, over 54,000 Atlas units were sold in the U.S., with nearly 78,500 including the Atlas Cross Sport, reflecting the brand’s focus on smaller, high-volume SUVs.

Volkswagen’s move marks a strategic shift toward electrification while maintaining its luxury SUV portfolio, potentially paving the way for an ID-branded electric successor to the iconic Touareg.
