Volkswagen has officially confirmed that the electric models previously known as the ID.4 and ID.5 will be renamed the ID. Tiguan, aligning the battery-electric SUV with the company’s established Tiguan model line.
The new ID. Tiguan will “take on the role of ID.4 and ID.5,” according to Volkswagen. The move continues the automaker’s strategy of using established model names for electric vehicles rather than relying exclusively on the “ID.” prefix followed by a number.
Volkswagen Expands Established Model Names Into EVs
Volkswagen began moving toward established names for its electric vehicles with the ID. Polo, previously known by the working name ID.2. The company has said it wants to carry familiar model names into its electric lineup and connect future EVs with established Volkswagen products.
Volkswagen brand chief Thomas Schäfer previously said the company’s model names are strongly established among customers and represent qualities including quality, timeless design and technology.
The ID. Tiguan follows that approach by linking Volkswagen’s electric SUV with the Tiguan name, which has been used across combustion-engine and hybrid versions.
ID. Tiguan Builds on Tiguan Model Line
Schäfer said more than 8.3 million Tiguan vehicles have been produced, making the name one of Volkswagen’s established model lines.
“More than 8.3 million Tiguan vehicles produced demonstrate the strength and trust associated with this model name. The Tiguan represents a versatile, premium vehicle and embodies the essence of True Volkswagen. With the ID. Tiguan, we are carrying this product promise into the electric future,” Schäfer said.
He added that the electric model combines premium design, interior space, intuitive operation and new technologies, while the electric and conventional versions are intended to address different powertrain preferences.
Electric and Conventional Tiguans to Share More Design Elements
The change also coincides with a closer visual relationship between the electric ID. Tiguan and its combustion-engine counterpart.
The earlier ID.4 and ID.5 had a more independent exterior design. Volkswagen’s new electric SUV is expected to share more visual characteristics with the established Tiguan, although the full extent of the similarities will become clearer at its upcoming world premiere in October.
Volkswagen has released initial official images showing the vehicle under camouflage. The images reveal an angular front end with a continuous light signature, reflecting elements of the brand’s current design language.
New Electric SUV Revealed in Camouflage
The initial images also show changes to the side and rear design compared with earlier ID models.
The ID. Tiguan features conventional door handles and a more clearly defined tailgate with a continuous rear light strip. Together with aerodynamic wheels and a pronounced shoulder line, these elements give the vehicle a more conventional SUV appearance.
The overall design combines characteristics associated with the previous ID.4 with styling cues from the combustion-engine Tiguan.
Volkswagen is expected to provide the full details of the ID. Tiguan at its world premiere in October, when the company will reveal the production model without its current camouflage.
