Velotric has announced the release of their latest electric bike design, the Thunder line, which features two lightweight models optimized for city riding. The Thunder 1 and Thunder 1 ST are pedal assist e-bikes that weigh just 36 pounds, making them some of the lightest budget e-bikes on the market. Despite their low weight, both models offer numerous features to enhance their functionality.
Both the Thunder 1 and Thunder 1 ST come with hydraulic disc brakes, adjustable brake levers, torque sensors for highly responsive pedal assist, 8-speed transmissions, automatically activating LED headlights, thru-axle hubs for increased strength and ruggedness, and internally routed cables. The Thunder 1 model includes built-in GPS tracking, which can be accessed through the Velotric app, as well as fingerprint unlocking and automatic rider recognition.
Additionally, it is compatible with an optional range extender battery accessory for 50% more battery range. The Thunder 1 ST, on the other hand, includes Apple’s Find My integration, which enables the bike to be tracked in areas where Apple products are commonly used.
Both models feature a 350W continuous and 600W peak-rated hub motor powered by a 352 Wh battery. The Thunder 1 ST has a rated range of 50 miles, while the Thunder 1 has a higher range of 70 miles. With five levels of pedal assist, a torque sensor, and an 8-speed derailleur, riders have a variety of options for pedaling.
The top speed of both models is 20 mph, which is in line with Class 1 e-bike regulations. However, an unlock option allows riders to increase the top speed to 25 mph, putting them in Class 3 territory.
The Thunder 1 and Thunder 1 ST do not come with racks or fenders, but these accessories will be available from Velotric in the future. The Thunder 1 has 700 x 38c tires, while the Thunder 1 ST has slightly wider 700 x 40c tires.
The Thunder 1 ST is available in sizes S and M for $1,499, while the Thunder 1 is available in sizes M and L for $1,799. The Thunder 1 comes in a Frozen Blue gradient or Crystal Black, while the Thunder 1 ST is available in Sand or Lava orange. Both models are excellent choices for those seeking a lightweight, feature-rich e-bike for urban riding.
