Vay Technology has announced a partnership with Verizon Business to utilize its 5G connectivity for the company’s fleet of remotely controlled vehicles in Las Vegas.
Vay, a German company that launched commercial operations in the city earlier this year, will rely on Verizon’s high-performance, low-latency network to manage the significant data needs of its teleoperated fleet.
Vay’s approach differs from traditional autonomous driving, as the company uses remote human drivers to control Kia EVs from a central teledrive center.
These vehicles are delivered to users without occupants, and once the customer reaches their destination, control is returned to the remote operator. Verizon’s 5G network will support both teleoperation and essential functions like telematics and over-the-air updates.
“Verizon’s technology has been critical for Vay’s entry into the U.S. market from Europe, and we look forward to continuing our relationship with them as we expand our commercial and B2B businesses,” said Thomas von der Ohe, CEO and co-founder of Vay.
TJ Fox, Senior Vice President of Verizon Business, also commented on the collaboration: “Vay’s unique operational model shows the importance of mobile connectivity for the future of transportation. Verizon’s coverage, performance, and network reliability are essential for handling the data load inherent to teleoperating their fleet to the highest standards of safety and capability.”
