In an unexpected collaboration, the United States military is set to transform its tactical capabilities with the integration of tiny electric vehicles, courtesy of a groundbreaking partnership between EV startup Arcimoto and Department of Defense contractor Matbock. Arcimoto, renowned for its quirky doorless “fun utility vehicles” and compact electric trucks, has announced a strategic alliance to deliver cutting-edge “electrical systems architecture and energy storage systems” to Matbock, a pioneer in “hybrid-electric tactical vehicles”.
The deal, which underscores Arcimoto’s dynamic evolution, can be traced back to none other than the visionary CEO of the company, Chris Dawson. Earlier this year, Dawson revealed his prior consultations with the Department of Defense, hinting at the imminent collaboration. With Matbock poised to benefit from Arcimoto’s innovative supply chain, the partnership promises to bolster the military’s tactical prowess while prioritizing the integration of American-made green energy technology.
As global concerns about climate change intensify, the US military’s reputation as a significant carbon emitter comes into focus. However, this partnership signifies a pivotal step towards mitigating its environmental impact. By harnessing Arcimoto’s drive and battery system, Matbock aims to significantly enhance vehicle performance and operational range, contributing to both efficiency and sustainability.
For Arcimoto, this strategic alliance provides a lifeline. Battling financial challenges that led to a production hiatus earlier this year, the company has made a remarkable comeback, securing an impressive $25 million through a series of successful fundraisers. As the week unfolds, Arcimoto is poised to unveil its latest financial reports, potentially shedding light on the magnitude of the military contract, which has been instrumental in the company’s resurgence.
However, the journey ahead remains uncertain. Arcimoto’s stock plummeted by 60% earlier this year, erasing nearly all gains achieved since its peak at $600 in February 2021. The year 2021 had marked a period of significant growth for the company, marked by its Oregon manufacturing site’s launch and the acquisition of Tilting Motor Works—a specialist in three-wheel conversion kits for touring motorcycles. Having delivered its maiden electric trike in 2017, Arcimoto’s Oregon facility commenced production in March 2022.
As the Arcimoto-Matbock partnership takes center stage, industry watchers eagerly await the unfolding narrative. With the military’s tactical landscape poised for a green overhaul and Arcimoto’s resurgence on the horizon, the dynamics of this collaboration might well shape the future of both mobility and defense.
