A recent sighting of a “Project Highland” Tesla Model 3 has shed light on the vehicle’s anticipated tail light redesign. The intriguing aspect is that the newly uncovered tail lights closely resemble renders shared by electric vehicle (EV) enthusiasts online.
As the production of “Project Highland” Model 3 units is expected to commence in the third quarter, the frequency of prototype sightings in the wild has increased. Tesla’s test vehicles have a knack for capturing attention on the road, and it comes as no surprise that photos of “Project Highland” units are being generously shared across social media platforms.
One such sighting was captured by Tesla enthusiast Ranjit Bhaskar, who shared the intriguing detail on Twitter. What sets this particular sighting apart from the typical “Project Highland” photos is that the covering on one of the updated Model 3’s tail lights was slightly askew, revealing a potential glimpse of the new design.

Upon closer inspection, the partially uncovered tail light showcases slightly slimmer dimensions in the trunk area of the apparent “Project Highland” Model 3. Surprisingly, the section dedicated to charging appears unchanged compared to the current version. An accurate illustration of this speculated tail light design has been shared online by Tesla enthusiast @CYBRTRK420.

It seems Tesla is sparing no effort to maximize the production of Model 3 units before the end of the second quarter. This has led to speculations that the company aims to clear out existing Model 3 inventory before the release of “Project Highland.” In the United States, Tesla has offered three months of free unlimited Supercharging for customers purchasing from the inventory. In China, Tesla has announced insurance subsidies for buyers of inventory Model 3 units.
Despite Tesla’s attempts to keep “Project Highland” under wraps, leaks regarding the updated Model 3 have surfaced over the past months. In April, a partially uncovered photo of a Highland unit was shared online. Aerial footage of the vehicle at the Fremont Factory also indicated that the updated Model 3 might adopt similar gear selectors as the Model S and Model X.
According to previous reports, the “Project Highland” update for the Model 3 is expected to introduce changes to the exterior and interior of the all-electric sedan. Furthermore, the design of the Model 3 has reportedly been modified to enhance its production efficiency.
With the upcoming launch of “Project Highland,” Tesla enthusiasts and potential buyers eagerly await the official unveiling, eager to witness the culmination of Tesla’s continuous efforts to improve and innovate their popular Model 3 sedan.
