Chinese automaker Geely is set to release a new variant of its popular Smart #1 electric vehicle (EV) later this year. The new model has been approved by Chinese regulators, giving us a sneak peek at its features.
Compared to other versions of the Smart #1, the new variant will come with a smaller 49 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, instead of the current 66 kWh ternary (NMC) battery. It will also have a single rear motor capable of producing 268 horsepower, which is the same motor used in the non-Brabus version of the car. However, the top-of-the-line Brabus version boasts an impressive 422 horsepower.

The upcoming model’s top speed will be limited to 180 km/h (112 mph), and its range is expected to be up to 400 km (248 miles). However, it’s unclear which test cycle was used to determine this range figure. The new car will also be 20kg (44 lbs.) lighter than the same rear-wheel drive version with the ternary battery.
The price of the new Smart #1 variant has not been announced yet, but it is expected to be the cheapest option available. Industry insiders predict it will be priced around CNY 170,000 – 180,000 (approximately $24,665 to $26,116).

With the release of this new variant, Geely continues to expand its electric vehicle offerings in the Chinese market, where demand for EVs continues to grow. The new Smart #1 is poised to be a cost-effective option for those looking for an affordable, yet efficient electric car.
