Electrification trends such as electric cars do not only occur in the mainstream car segment. But also high-performance cars such as sports car are slowly starting to follow the trend of becoming electric cars. One of them is the Audi R8 which is likely to be present in the latest generation as a sports car with an electric powertrain configuration.

As reported by Carscoops, this latest generation Audi R8 will stand under the latest platform called SSP Sport. This platform itself was developed jointly by Audi and Porsche and is specifically designed for sports cars that support electrification. This platform is also used by the Porsche Cayman and Boxster which uses an electric engine.

The battery will be placed vertically on this platform and stacked behind the seat. The SSP Sports platform itself will replace the J1 platform which was previously used in the Porsche Taycan and Audi E-Tron GT. Even so, the specifications of the drivetrain that will be used are still not clearly disclosed until now.

In recent years, many have predicted that the Audi R8 will turn into a sports car with an electric engine. Even in a report released by CNET, Audi Sport’s Head of Product Marketing, Linda Kurz stated that all R Series sports cars from Audi will be transformed into electrification with the R8 as the first product to get the technology.

Even so, Audi’s transition to making sports cars into environmentally friendly and fully electrified cars is not an easy job. The boss of Audi Sport, Sebastian Grams said that they had to prepare the concept of an electric sports car that could be accepted by consumers. “We had to make sure that the electrified R8 successor didn’t leave the sports car character behind, so this was an interesting challenge,” said Grams.
