UltraTech Cement has expanded its electric truck fleet in India with the deployment of 45 additional battery-electric heavy-duty vehicles, bringing its total e-truck fleet to 89 units.

The company, the flagship cement business of the Aditya Birla Group, plans to use the newly added electric trucks to transport clinker from its Kotputli Cement Works facility in Rajasthan to the Dadri Cement Works and Sikandrabad Cement Works plants in Uttar Pradesh.

The transportation route covers approximately 250 kilometres and passes through the state of Haryana.

Partnership with Energy In Motion

For the latest fleet expansion, UltraTech Cement has partnered with Energy In Motion (EIM), an Indian provider of electric commercial vehicle solutions.

While the company did not disclose the exact truck model being deployed, images released alongside the announcement indicate the vehicles are likely EIM’s Ashwa electric tractor units.

The Ashwa is based on the Foton eAuman platform, which EIM assembles and markets exclusively in India.

Swappable Battery Technology

The Ashwa electric truck features a gross combination weight of 55 tonnes and is equipped with a 282 kWh swappable battery pack.

According to EIM, battery replacement can be completed in less than seven minutes, helping reduce vehicle downtime and improve fleet utilization.

The company has not disclosed the vehicle’s driving range.

EIM is also building a nationwide battery-swapping and charging infrastructure network to support the deployment of electric heavy-duty commercial vehicles across India.

Larger Battery Version in Development

According to a business report released by Ravindra Energy, which owns a 49.5 per cent stake in EIM, an upgraded Ashwa variant featuring a larger 350 kWh battery pack is currently undergoing homologation.

The report also noted that EIM had established three operational battery-swapping stations and was in the process of deploying seven additional facilities.

By March 2026, cumulative deliveries of Ashwa electric trucks had reached 311 units.

Supporting Sustainable Logistics

UltraTech Cement expects the latest fleet expansion to significantly reduce emissions and fuel consumption across its logistics operations.

The company estimates that the deployment of 45 additional electric trucks will lower diesel consumption by approximately 2.9 million litres per year.

The initiative is also expected to prevent more than 8,900 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

“This deployment demonstrates our commitment to building a future-ready logistics network while supporting the nation’s sustainability ambitions,” said K C Jhanwar, Managing Director of UltraTech Cement.

Growing Electrification in Heavy Transport

The deployment reflects the increasing adoption of electric heavy-duty trucks in India’s industrial and logistics sectors as companies seek to reduce operating emissions and dependence on fossil fuels.

Battery-swapping technology is emerging as a key enabler for commercial fleet electrification, particularly in long-haul and high-utilisation applications where minimizing charging downtime is critical.

UltraTech Cement’s growing electric truck fleet forms part of broader efforts across the country to decarbonize freight transportation and accelerate the transition toward cleaner industrial supply chains.
